As a leading dental practice serving patients of all ages, we provide a wide range of treatment options ranging from general dental treatment to cosmetic dentistry. If you're dissatisfied with your smile and want to improve it but don't want to undergo extensive dental treatment, cosmetic dentistry can help -- and cosmetic bonding is one of the most convenient options.

What Is Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding, also called composite bonding, is a convenient, effective cosmetic dental treatment that can be used to repair chips, discoloration, and other minor imperfections in your smile. It's a fast, convenient procedure that requires very little time in the dentist's chair, and it can completely transform the appearance of your smile.

Bonding is remarkably simple. Your Winter Springs cosmetic dentist simply applies a thin layer of tooth-colored composite resin to the front of your teeth, then carefully shapes and fine-tunes the material to match the appearance of your natural teeth. In the process, we change the outward appearance of your smile and can fix minor issues like chips, cracks, discoloration, stains, and small gaps between teeth.

How Does Cosmetic Bonding Work?

Composite bonding is a simple, routine procedure, and because it requires no dental laboratory work, we can usually finish the procedure in just one appointment. The procedure generally takes 30-60 minutes and runs as follows:

  • First, your dentist will thoroughly clean your teeth to remove any bacteria or plaque, then carefully "etch" the front of the teeth with an acidic gel that opens microscopic pores in the surface of the enamel. This etching ensures that the composite resin will form a strong bond with your tooth material.
  • Next, your dentist will paint a thin layer of color-matched composite resin to the front of the teeth, creating a new outward surface. We'll then use a specialized light to cure and harden the resin, after which your dentist will apply another layer and repeat the process. We'll use as many layers as necessary to achieve the desired thickness, but most patients need about 3-4 coats.
  • Once the resin is painted to the teeth, your cosmetic dentist will use a variety of specialized tools to carefully shape the resin to perfectly match the appearance of a natural, healthy tooth, correcting imperfections in your smile during the process.
  • After the shaping process, you'll have a gorgeous new smile that's yours to keep!

How Do You Care For Your Teeth After Cosmetic Bonds?

Just like natural teeth, you'll need to take good care of your bonded teeth by brushing and flossing daily, as well as maintaining regular cleaning and exam appointments every six months. Furthermore, remember that the resin used in bonds is susceptible to staining just like natural teeth; smoking, red wine, coffee, tea, and strongly-colored foods like tomato sauce can all stain bonded teeth and should be avoided.

Try to avoid biting your nails, chewing on foreign objects, or using your teeth in any way that might put too much force on the bonding material, as this can cause it to chip. And finally, remember that you can't get teeth whitening treatment with cosmetic bonds. Instead, you should whiten your teeth before bonding so the bonds can be made with a lighter shade that matches your whitened teeth. Luckily, that is also a service we offer here at our office!
